While they looked at the hot springs, Ratliff?s dog Moosie escaped and jumped into nearby Celestine Pool. Kirwan went into the pool to save the dog. #2 The idea of being boiled to death in a hot spring is a truly terrifying one for any rational person. However, this has happened more frequently in Yellowstone National Park than it has with grizzly bears. #3 The number of tourists in Yellowstone Park increased as it became more accessible, and so did the chances of visitor injury. In 1882, a traveler named Walter Watson fell into a long and deep geyser tube, while accompanied by three other men, who gave him up for dead and left. #4 In the 1880s, hot-spring injuries began to occur in greater numbers as visitors to Yellowstone increased. A Mr. Crossman was scalded in the Fountain Paintpot in 1884, a young boy in the same summer who convalesced at Marshall?s Hotel, and another man in the Artists? Paintpots in 1888.
