It is costly because it condemns sin, and grace because it justifies the sinner. #4 The Church of Rome was able to tolerate the monastic movement, and even use it to justify the secularization of its own life. Monasticism was thus a living protest against the Church?s secularization, but the Church was able to limit the application of the commandments of Jesus to a restricted group of specialists.
