It is generated in places all over the body, and then travels via multiple pathways to a structure in the brain called the insula. Some individuals are interoceptive champions, able to determine when their heart beats, while others are interoceptive duds, unable to feel the rhythm. #3 We are constantly collecting and storing information about the world around us, and this process is what allows us to recognize and understand patterns. We are not able to articulate the content of our non-conscious knowledge, but it is still there. #4 We are constantly using information that we acquired nonconsciously. We are not aware that these searches are taking place, but our interoceptive faculty alerts us when a potentially relevant pattern is detected.
